IT companies in Bristol: How to find one that will improve your IT

TL;DR: Finding a new IT provider in Bristol

Bristol is home to many thriving businesses, a large number of which partner with local or national IT companies for ongoing IT support and IT consultancy.

  • Lots of Bristol IT companies can provide dependable break-fix support
  • A smaller selection of more advanced MSPs can deliver fully-managed services with more mature processes across IT and cyber security.
  • Fewer still combine ongoing managed support with IT transformation expertise.
  • If you’re actively evaluating providers, we’ve highlighted eleven key criteria to consider.

Bristol’s IT market

Bristol has built a strong reputation as a technology hub. The city sits at the centre of a cluster that stretches across Bath, Gloucester and Swindon, sometimes referred to as “Silicon Gorge”, and is home to over 200 high-growth tech companies.

Behind most of those businesses is an IT setup that either helps them work well or holds them back.

The technology available to smaller organisations has improved in recent years. For example, Microsoft 365 Business Premium now includes security, compliance and device management tools that used to sit behind enterprise-only M365 licences such as E3 and E5 – as well as having cost-effective Defender Suite and Purview Suite for Business Premium add-ons available.

Today, organisations of almost any size can run mature, well-governed IT if they have the right IT support and expertise in place.

The hardest part in achieving this is often finding the right IT company to help provide that support and IT transformation.

For organisations weighing up whether in-house IT is the right model, it’s worth considering why businesses outsource their IT, including co-managed vs fully outsourced models, before comparing providers.

IT support and IT improvement are different things

IT support keeps systems running, while IT improvement changes how those systems work. Most IT companies in Bristol offer the first; fewer can deliver the second.

Support is typically reactive and ticket-driven. It usually focuses on fixing issues and getting things back to normal. That has value, but it also has a ceiling. An organisation running purely on reactive IT support will often fix the same problems repeatedly, accumulate technical debt, and gradually fall behind on security and efficiency.

Improvement, through IT transformation initiatives, is proactive and planned. It looks at the whole environment rather than individual incidents, identifies root causes rather than symptoms, and anticipates what an organisation needs before they’ve even thought to ask for it.

A good provider will regularly identify risks, inefficiencies and opportunities that the customer wasn’t even aware of.

In most cases, that will involve moving towards a more modern, cloud-based setup and getting more from the platforms you already pay for. The benefit comes from how the technology is configured, connected and managed, rather than just the licences themselves.

The distinction between support and improvement is key when choosing an IT provider. An IT company that’s only set up to handle tickets will keep your IT stable, while one with a genuine transformation skillset could make it significantly better.

The two types of IT provider worth understanding

Most IT companies in Bristol provide services that fit into one of two main categories:

  • Reactive (break-fix support)
  • Proactive (fully managed IT services with a higher level of service maturity).

Understanding the difference tends to make the rest of the evaluation considerably easier.

Reactive, break-fix IT support providers

At one end of the market are providers that respond to problems, often referred to as traditional “break-fix” firms. While often assumed to be the smaller IT providers, some larger firms are still very much break-fix in their operations.

These break-fix providers tend to work across whatever their clients have — a mix of platforms and third-party tools — so expertise can be spread thinly across a lot of ground.

For small businesses with simple IT requirements (e.g. less than 30 people), this can work well. It tends to become a problem when the business grows, wants to modernise, or faces a situation that needs genuine technical depth to resolve.

Proactive MSPs

The other type of provider is the more ‘mature’ MSP that delivers a suite of managed services that go well beyond just responding to support tickets and IT requests.

A “fully managed IT service” typically covers helpdesk, proactive monitoring and maintenance, infrastructure and cloud management, network management, endpoint and device management, security hardening, service delivery management and IT strategy — running together as a cohesive service rather than in isolation. Read our overview of managed IT services for more detail.

While many IT companies claim to offer this (including smaller providers), it’s often just break-fix support with some added extras on top – so it’s worth probing them about exactly what the service includes.

The more capable IT companies in Bristol will operate with structured processes, often aligned to the ITIL framework. This will usually include aspects such as dedicated Service Delivery Managers (SDMs), formal service reviews, improvement plans, risk registers, and disciplines like problem management and change management. With this level of service, the focus shifts from fixing what breaks to identifying what should be improved before it becomes an issue.

Transformation-focused MSPs

Some mature MSPs go further by combining ongoing managed support with strategic IT transformation. They actively work with you to improve your IT while day-to-day support continues in the background, building more mature, cost-effective environments over time.
Their consultancy expertise is what makes this possible. By developing a thorough understanding of your infrastructure and strategic goals, they can deliver professional services work throughout the contract, reducing IT incidents, improving efficiency for your team, and lowering the support burden over time.

The transformation approach typically follows a clear progression:

  • Onboard, stabilise the environment, and deliver ongoing support
  • Understand the infrastructure and systems thoroughly, identify and implement strategic improvements
  • Build towards more advanced capabilities over time.
  • Increase IT efficiency and productivity, reduce IT incidents and downtime

For example, when Chorus onboards a new customer we’ll try to align their environment to Cyber Essentials standards as part of the process, establishing a solid technical foundation before building a strategic roadmap for ongoing IT improvement.

We don’t just leave customers in the state we found them. We bring them up to best practice.

With these transformation-focused MSPs, size and focus can vary. Smaller specialist MSPs often offer closer account management, more direct relationships and specialist vendor expertise. While larger providers can bring broader coverage across tech stacks, with greater resources and larger teams.

National firms sometimes have Bristol offices with genuine local delivery, while others route everything remotely with a ‘local presence’ that is little more than a rented hot desk. It’s worth considering how important local presence is for your IT service and whether you might need readily available on-site support.

What to look for when choosing an IT company in Bristol

When comparing IT companies in Bristol, consider this checklist:

What to check when comparing IT companies in Bristol Why it’s important What good looks like
Reputation and experience Longevity and client retention are better signals than marketing claims. An MSP with a track record reduces delivery risk. Years in business, verifiable case studies, references from organisations of similar size. Check Companies House for financial stability.
Cyber security capability Security is critical to modern IT. Your provider should bring proven cyber security expertise and credible, current accreditations. Security decisions and strategy should run through your IT service as standard. A recent survey by ConnectWise found that around 73% of SMEs aren’t fully confident in their MSP to defend them from a cyber attack — which points to a gap between what providers offer and what customers need. If you’re unsure whether your current provider’s security capability is sufficient, it’s worth considering whether you should rely on your MSP to keep you secure. Recognised security accreditations such as Microsoft security specialisations or MISA membership. Managed Detection and Response (MDR) or Managed Extended Detection and Response (MXDR) capability, backed by a dedicated Security Operations Centre (SOC) and security analysts. Clear expertise in Zero Trust principles and alignment to standards such as Cyber Essentials.
Service scope and SLAs A reactive helpdesk and a full managed service are very different. Clear SLAs, proactive maintenance, monitoring, device and cloud management, and service delivery included.
Depth of technical expertise Generalists can lack depth as environments become more complex and security-driven. Specialist expertise in core platforms like Microsoft 365, Azure and Microsoft Security, plus evidence of complex projects, migrations or security improvements delivered in similar environments. For Microsoft-focused organisations, look for depth across tools like Intune, Entra ID, Purview and Sentinel, as well as productivity platforms such as SharePoint Online, Viva and and Microsoft 365 Copilot
Communication and support model Communication quality shapes the working relationship as much as technical skill. Multiple channels, SLAs, Service Delivery Manager, and regular forward-looking service reviews.
Transformation approach If you want your IT to improve over time, your provider needs to be able to demonstrate a clear method and roadmap to make that happen, while supporting your business goals. A structured onboarding process that produces a clear view of the environment. A roadmap for improvement and demonstration of how environments can be developed to a higher level of IT maturity over the contract term.
Credentials and accreditations Certifications confirm technical competency and commitment to quality and security standards. They need to be current. ISO 27001, ISO 9001, Cyber Essentials Plus and accredited partnerships with key vendors. Ask for proof from vendor portals.
Technology partnerships Strong vendor relationships give MSPs better pricing, early access and escalation paths. Partner status with core platforms like Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace.
Size and service model Provider size affects how support is delivered day to day. Defined roles, consistent team, clear escalation paths, and ability to scale with your business.
Co-managed service capability Many organisations retain in-house IT while outsourcing some responsibilities. A co-managed approach allows both teams to work together, combining internal knowledge with external expertise and scale. A flexible model that integrates with your internal IT team. Clear roles and responsibilities, access to specialist skills and 24/7 support, and the ability to scale support up or down as needed.
Vendor lock-in and exit planning Switching providers can be difficult if systems, licences or data aren’t properly controlled. Poor exit planning can lead to risk, disruption or additional cost. Clear ownership of your data, systems and licences. Clear contracts with defined exit terms and an explanation of offboarding processes to support transition if needed.
Costs, value and transparency The cheapest option rarely delivers the best value once scope and exclusions are factored in. Transparency in managed IT services is worth understanding before you commit to a contract. Transparent pricing, clear inclusions, and honest advice on reducing unnecessary spend.
Local delivery vs remote model “Local presence” doesn’t always mean local engineers. Clear engineer location, defined on-site response times in SLA.
